My parents and I are thinking about moving to Mesa, AZ in a few months and I was wondering how safe Mesa actually is and are there any ghetto areas to watch out for?
Also, what is there to do at night for an 18 year old girl? like are there any clubs in the surrounding areas?

I spent some time living in mesa before moving to scottsdale and it was pure hell. I had numerous break-ins at my apartment, a rape attempt and my car vandalized about three times. I never had this stuff happen to me since living here in scottsdale so I would never suggest someone move to mesa

Mesa is a good area, but can I recommend Tempe or Scottsdale...much nicer and its also I feel a bit safer. Im not sure about nightlife (clubs) or something like that. You could try going down on Mill Ave in Tempe, there are all sorts of restaurants and shopping. Plus there is the Arizona Mills Mall in Tempe, The Fiesta Mall off the Superstition Freeway @ Alma School Road. You just have to explore the area!!!!!!!!!!
Im actually planning a move to Tempe next year in Late February/March!!!!!!!!!!!

I live in west Mesa close to the Tempe, Mesa border. Mesa is nothing special, it is a town full of strip malls, apartments and fast food joints. I moved here from downtown Tempe, and I liked the area over there a lot better. Anywhere around Main Street is somewhere you probably wouldn't want to live. My advice to you would be to move to Gilbert. Gilbert is east of Mesa, it tends to be newer and nicer with good neighborhoods. Mesa is a very boring place with nothing to do. Moving to Chandler, Gilbert or Tempe would be my advice. I hope I didn't hurt your plans, I am just telling the truth, I am a 19 year old student and I am moving in 3 months (out of AZ) because my boyfriend and I don't like it here (he is from the midwest).

Mesa is relatively safe.....given that it is a boarder state there are tons of Latino illegals who have crossed the boarder from Mexico. Go to www.greatschools.com and that sight can redirect you to city demographics.
You would do better leaning toward the Scottsdale side of Phoenix or Phoenix for that matter. I do know that the Scottsdale area is more costly but have schools that rank in the top 10% nationally.
Another suggestion is to get online and type in Mesa Chamber of Commerce or the Mesa Police dept. These will lead you to the crime index and registered offenders.
As far as nightlife, Mesa itself is just so-so. You could go to some of the surrounding areas for a good nightlife though. ASU is in Tempe and as such has a lot of clubs and bars to choose from. Mesa and Tempe are both part of the Phoenix Metropolitan area.

Some parts of Mesa are the ghetto, and the nightlife sucks. Move to Scottsdale.

your best bet would be scottsdale (expensive), tempe (college orientated), gilbert or chandler. Mesa unfortunately is one of the most troublesome areas of the greater pheonix area....really consider this if you plan on moving out here. we have been here two years, but plan on going back to the southeast in the coming new year for family reasons...There are plenty of activities, many free or very affordable in the area....do some more research before making this move....and steer clear of mesa

My daughter had a friend that moved to Mesa last year. He stopped for a bite to eat and found his truck and everything he owned was gone. He tried to report it to the Mesa police. They declared him a vagrant and they took him to the edge of the city and dumped him out. My daughter called me and asked if I could help. It took several trips into Mesa to get her friend out of there. I thought I had seen the most seedy parts of the valley but that Mesa takes the cake. Even Glendale's worst neighbourhood is not that bad.
I advise you and your family to be careful where you buy a home anywhere in the valley. Keep in mind, that half of the people who moved to this area return to east in their first year here.
Good luck with your move.
