I drove straight through (stopping for gas and a quick lunch) and it took me 11 hours. It was from the Santa Teresa Hospital area in San Jose and back to Phoenix near the 101 and Bell Road. I have to admit it was a little tough. The worst part was of course getting through the L.A. area. I have made the trip several times and it doesn't matter what time of day I have driven through there it is always jammed. But try and plan the trip so that you go through the LA area no where near the heavy commute times. Most times I stop and spend the night in Blythe (its about 3 hrs) from Phoenix there are quite a few hotels there and it makes the whole trip a little bit easier.

It's appx 12 hours. And you do not need to go through Los Angeles. You can cut through central CA (Madera/Fresno area) and get into AZ around the Kingman area and drive south from there. It can be done in a day, but it's a long day, so if you have small kids or animals, it's a trip you may want to cut into two chunks...driving half of it one day and then the rest of the way the next.

It depends on how fast you drive and how many breaks you take. But if you plan properly and pass through LA during off peak time it should take 10 to 11 hours of driving time.
