Payson is a small city East of the Phoenix about a hour from Mesa. Globe area is East of town 45 minutes from Mesa or you have Gold Canyon about 30 East of Mesa that are all great places to raise a family. Or out west you have Wickenberg, Avondale or even Goodyear. They are all good places to live.

I live in Tucson. Got a weird culture, and a cool atmosphere, may be an acquired taste for some. It may be a little rough in some areas, but some parts of town cater to millionaires.

Prescott is a nice small western style town not far from the woods. Flagstaff is in a nice location has a nice university NAU, and is close to a bunch of national parks, again not far from the woods.

Phoenix is big and hot in the summer. But with 4 prefessional sports teams, ASU and the clubs in Scottsdale, and Tempe.. ahhh maybe.

Bisbee caters to artists and lesbians.

Tubac is a neat little artist community south of Tucson.

to the other post "Anywhere not in Arizona! Phoenix is dangerous, hot and overpriced. The small towns don't have jobs and the cities are full of crime."... Nice

Since when is Phoenix overpriced? Dangerous? With most states, it depends where you live. I feel safe here in Tucson.

I've always thought of Prescott as a beautiful, safe place to raise a family, there is work there (the area is growing) and you still get seasons (unlike Phoenix or anywhere in the lower deserts). Payson is also worth checking out. Both have tons of outdoor activities and available jobs. Take a look at both.

I would have to say the best towns here are East Mesa, chandler and Awatukee. East Mesa is really nice and very close to Saguaro Lake. Chandler has nice places to live and nice places to shop (but it is kind of growing) Awatukee is very nice and kind of small and close to Phoenix, I really like Awatukee that would probably be my choice to raise a family.

Flagstaff is only 2 hours from Phoenix and has a smaller town feel, a liberal university, and is close (1.5 hours) to the Grand Canyon and very close to the incredibly beautiful Sedona.

tucson is quite a bit farther south than phoenix. i travel to scottsdale every year and HIGHLY recommend it. its a gorgeous place, very close to phoenix. i love it so much im planning on moving there the moment i turn 18. haha. but its an amazing place, definitely worth looking in to. the people there are generally pretty friendly, and its lovely weather.

Tucson is a fantastic place to live! Everything you could want is there. Plus the wonderful range of climate (too hot? then drive a few miles up Mt. Lemmon to cool off). And the old cliche is true-it really IS a drier more comfortable heat. The people are friendly, and the cost of living is reasonable. I call it the USA's "biggest small town".

Anywhere not in Arizona! Phoenix is dangerous, hot and overpriced. The small towns don't have jobs and the cities are full of crime.
