My wife and I are thinking about driving from SLC to Phoenix over Thanksgiving. We have a 4 and a 2 year old, what would be the fastest route and most scenic (if there is one). Going through Las Vegas seems too long, is there another route to take? We would try to drive it in 2 days.

going through st. george -vegas ect to phoenix is the only way I know and I have driven it about 20 times if you drive start to stop it takes about 10 - 11 hours depending on road construction.

can be done in 9 however thats without kids and no road construction which is a near miracle on that road!!

Hope you have a great trip.

by the way kids travel pretty well just pack some healthy snacks before you leave.

edit: there are not alot of gas stations along the road so fill up before leaving st. george and vegas even if you have a half tank.

There's three ways to do this and I've driven all three of them many times and in many combinations.

Whether or not it's snowing and if so where and how heavy will be the determing factor as to whether or not you go

1)SLC >LAS > Kingman AZ> Wickenberg AZ > PHX.

My favorite and most scenic routing would be

2) I-15 S > I-70 E >2exits >US 89 > Kanab

> US 89A South thru Fredonia AZ up and over the N.Rim of GCNP via Jacob Lake AZ > into Lees Ferry Az the US 89 S > I -40 W >I-17S > PHX That routing can get snow from the jct of SR 62 & SR 9 [it's also a stunningly beautiful road that sits n on high ridge] snow will also happen from when you get into the trees on 89A going up to Jacob Lake and until you leave the trees on the dowhill to Lee's Ferry

On 89 S in AZ snow happens from Sinagua all the way to basically the Sedona exit on I-17 S

3) A minor modification to the above which is less scenic, less snowy and actually faster is I-15 S to SR9 at Hurricane UT .

If you want to see Zion NP make a left at the end of town the follow SR 9 uphill to the jct of US 89 S then 89A as above

If you've seen Zion make a right , then your first left up the 10% grade that is the begining of SR59 .Hilldale UT> Fredonia AZ .

Most people do this trip in a day however if you need to 2 days.

Kingman AZ is a good choice if you're going via LAS and the Cameron Trading Post in Cameron Az is a great choice if you're going via N.Rim of GCNP

You should know that the members of the church do favor other church members by patronage of business jobs, etc. As is natural and good, everyone should support their fellow church members ahead of other people. There are many non-Mormons in Salt Lake also. Why not rent a place there by the month and try it for a while ? If you find you don't want to stay, it would be easy to move again My neighbors, Mormons, are retired teachers and very nice people. I think you will like living there quite a lot..

In my opinion going through Las Vegas is a total nightmare. But I like going through Page. If the roads are bad I stay on i-15 till Hurricane. I get off and drive through Colorado City and then through Kanab, to Page and then to Flagstaff and then to Phoenix. It the weather is good I start on I-15 and take the 20 or the summit and then south through Panquitch to Kanab and then through page and Flagstaff. I like to go over the reservation to the gap because the road it flatter and not as mountainous. I prefer this way over Las Vegas. The crazy construction always going on through Las Vegas is a nightmare and totally ugly. But we always get lost in Las Vegas and can never find the way to Arizona from their. Good luck on finding you way.
